Bungoma leaders have reached a consensus with the traders, taxi, lorry and pick up operators over the recent relocations in Bungoma.
The county government is involved in an ambitious program to reorganize and clean up Bungoma town hence informing the relocations.
In a meeting held in a Bungoma Hotel, the operators agreed with the leadership to relocate as earlier guided by the Department of Urban and Phsyical Planning .
The meeting was attended by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, area Senator Wafula Wakoli and Kanduyi MP John Makali .
During the meeting, it was agreed that the pick up and lorry operators will operate at the railways reserve within Bungoma town after consultations with the Kenya Railways Cooperation.
“We have agreed with the MD Kenya Railways to host those operators in the meantime while the county will put up basic social amenities,” Said Wetang’ula.
The operators will however not be allowed to put up any permanent structures.
The Taxi operators on the other hand will operate behind the main bus terminus .
Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka said that plans were underway for the Chebkube traders to be moved in the market under construction to avoid congestion on the dual carriage highway.
“The project was done by the National Government but I have already spoken to relevant authorities to ensure the contractor is back on site and completes the project,” Said Lusaka.
The leaders said that the issue of reorganizing and ensuring Bungoma town is clean is irreversible.
“We can assure you that the decision to clean up Bungoma town does not intend to hurt anyone but make our town look better like other towns,” said Wetang’ula.
He added that there is no way elected leaders could want to hurt their people.
Lusaka said reorganization of Bungoma town was aimed at making the town grow to a city status in the near future .
“We must make our town clean ,we will try as much as possible to find alternative places,” said Lusaka.
Chair of the Taxi, pickups and lorry operators Dennis Situma assured that they will support the county government in it’s endeavor to clean Bungoma.
“We also want to see our town clean, what we are only asking is we are relocated as agreed,” said Situma
